Strawberry Trifle
I’ve been making some version of this strawberry trifle for years, mostly when I’m too tired to bake but still want something that feels like dessert. It’s just angel food cake, pudding, strawberries, and whipped cream—layered in a bowl and chilled until it feels a little more put-together than it actually is. The kids love it, it looks pretty, and I don’t have to fight with my oven. Win, win, done.

Make This Recipe Yours With Additions
- Sliced Bananas: Layer a few in with the strawberries. Slice them right before using so they don’t brown.
- Crushed Cookies: If you want some crunch in all that fluff, layer in ½ cup of crushed shortbread cookies.
- Strawberry Preserves: Spoon a little between the cake and pudding layers for extra strawberry flavor!
- Toasted Coconut: Add about ½ cup in the middle or toss it on top.
- Chocolate or Caramel Drizzle: Optional, but it makes your strawberry and white chocolate trifle look even prettier!
Prep Ahead
Prep What You Can: Slice the angel food cake and strawberries a day ahead. Store the cake in an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out, and toss the strawberries in a bit of sugar.
Pudding: Make the pudding the day before and let it chill in the fridge. It actually sets better this way!

Assemble Early: You can build the whole strawberry trifle with white chocolate a few hours ahead, just cover it and chill until serving.
Recipe Tips
- Freeze, Then Slice: For cleaner cuts and way less crumb mess, freeze your angel food cake for 30 minutes before slicing. Use a serrated knife so you don’t squish it.
- Keep Layers Even: Try to spread each layer out evenly, and press down just a little to get rid of any air gaps. It helps the trifle hold its shape.
- Let It Chill: Don’t skip the chill y’all! That hour in the fridge lets everything settle.
- Scoop It Well: When serving, use a large spoon and go all the way to the bottom so you get cake, pudding, berries, and whipped cream in every scoop.

Quick Recipe Help and Common Questions
I don’t have a trifle dish. What can I use instead?
Literally any clear bowl works. A big glass salad bowl, a deep Pyrex, even a punch bowl. You can also make individual trifles in mason jars, wine glasses, or whatever random glassware you have.
Can I use frozen berries?
Yes! Thaw and drain them well first so they don’t flood your layers with berry juice.
Can I make this easy strawberry trifle dairy-free?
You can! Use a non-dairy whipped topping (there are a bunch now), almond or oat milk for the pudding (check the box to make sure it’ll set), and a dairy-free cake. White chocolate might be trickier—look for vegan options or skip it and sub in dark chocolate shavings.
