Baked Burgers
This easy baked hamburger recipe is cooked in the oven and ready in 20-ish minutes. Frozen burger patties or fresh patties will work for this recipe.

Baked hamburgers is one of the two things I can count on my kids eating without a fight (if you didn’t guess chicken tenders is the second one!).
I love how easy they are. I cheat here and grab frozen burgers or thawed pre-made burger patties, toss them on a baking sheet, and let the oven do all the work. Prep takes maybe two minutes, and baking the burgers is about 20 minutes for frozen and only 12-ish for thawed burger patties, which is greaaat since I’ll probably spend the rest of the time remaking all the drinks that magically vanish as soon as dinner is ready.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 8 burger patties about ¼ pound each, fresh or frozen
- salt and pepper to taste
- garlic powder to taste
- 8 burger buns
- 8 slices cheese cheddar optional
- toppings of choice: lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mayo or mustard
Instructions
For Fresh or Thawed Burger Patties:
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to broil and position the oven rack in the center.
- Season Patties: Lightly season both sides of the patties with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Place a wire rack on a foil-lined baking sheet. Arrange the seasoned patties on the rack to allow for even cooking.
- Broil First Side: Place the baking sheet in the oven and broil the patties for 5-6 minutes, or until the tops are browned.
- Flip and Broil Second Side: Carefully flip the patties and broil for an additional 5-6 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for fully cooked burgers.
- Optional Add Cheese: Turn off the oven. Top each patty with a slice of cheese and return to the warm oven for about 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese.
- Assemble Burgers: Remove the patties from the oven and place them on 8 burger buns. Add your preferred toppings and serve immediately.
For Frozen Burger Patties:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place the frozen burger patties on the prepared sheet, spacing them evenly.
- Season Patties: Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder on the top side of the frozen patties.
- Bake First Side: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Flip and Bake Second Side: Flip the patties, season with salt and pepper and garlic powder and continue baking for an additional 10-12 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Optional Add Cheese: During the last 2-3 minutes of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- Assemble Burgers: Remove from the oven and place the patties on 8 burger buns. Add your favorite toppings and serve hot.
Notes
- Use a Wire Rack: Placing the patties on a wire rack allows air to circulate and fat to drip off, giving you evenly cooked burgers without a greasy mess.
- Check Doneness: Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature of the patties reaches 160°F (71°C) for food safety.
- Toast the Buns: A quick toast in the oven or on the stovetop gives the buns a bit of crispiness and keeps them from getting soggy.
- Let Them Rest: Give the burgers a few minutes to rest after baking. This helps the juices redistribute, so they stay juicy with every bite.
Types of Burgers You Can Make
- Classic Burger: Keep it simple with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Add ketchup, mustard, and mayo for a timeless burger.
- BBQ Burger: Top the patty with cheddar cheese, crispy onion rings, and a generous drizzle of BBQ sauce. Add bacon if you want.
- Bacon Cheeseburger: Layer bacon under the melted cheese. Serve with lettuce, tomato, and mayo or ranch dressing.
- Mushroom Swiss Burger: Sauté mushrooms in butter until golden, then pile them onto the patty with melted Swiss cheese. Add a little garlic aioli or Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
- Spicy Jalapeño Burger: Add sliced jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, and a smear of chipotle mayo. Top with lettuce.
- Avocado Burger: Top your burger with avocado slices, red onion, and Monterey Jack cheese. Add a squeeze of lime… it’s soo freakin’ good!
- Breakfast Burger: Add a fried egg, crispy bacon, and cheddar cheese. Serve on a toasted bun with spicy mayo or hot sauce.

How to store & reheat Burgers
Storing Baked Hamburgers
Cool Completely: Let the patties cool to room temperature before storing.
Never Lose This Recipe—Email It to Yourself!
Refrigerate: Place the patties in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in foil. They’ll stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3–4 days.
Freeze for Later: If you want to keep them longer, freeze the patties. Layer them with parchment paper in a freezer-safe container or bag to prevent sticking. They’ll last up to 3 months.
Reheating
In the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Wrap the patties in foil to lock in moisture, then heat for about 10–15 minutes or until warmed through.
On the Stovetop: Place the patties in a skillet over medium heat. Add a splash of water or broth, cover, and heat for 3–5 minutes on each side.
In the Microwave: Use a microwave-safe plate and cover the patty with a damp paper towel to keep it from drying out. Heat in 30-second intervals until warm.
Quick Recipe Help and Common Questions
Why are my burgers coming out dry?
Dry burgers are often the result of overcooking. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For beef, aim for 160°F; for turkey, 165°F. Let the patties rest for a few minutes before serving to lock in the juices.
Can I make burgers without a wire rack?
Yes, but a wire rack helps with even cooking and prevents the burgers from sitting in grease. If you don’t have one, use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and flip the patties halfway through cooking.
How do I prevent the burgers from splattering in the oven?
Position the oven rack in the center and line the baking sheet with foil to catch any drippings. This helps minimize mess and splattering.
